Putting the health of the whole at the core of the governance agenda

Together we can heal the planet and create a healthy new form of governance that is aligned with life

and will ensure a healthy and thriving future for all.

Citizens for a Healthy Earth (CHE) is an emerging global citizen-led movement dedicated to developing and implementing practical strategies to ensure the health and vitality of the planet and all its inhabitants for generations to come.

CHE offers a framework and agenda for nonpartisan local and global ecogovernance rooted in interdisciplinary wisdom that draws on best practices from across the world for social and environmental health and healing.

It provides a whole-system approach to managing collective resources that puts the health of the land and all its inhabitants as the core purpose and organizing principle for governance

It focuses on the whole-system health consequences of all social structures, policies and laws and demands full responsibility and accountability for these consequences.

The movement works to unite individuals across regions in service of our collective healing in ways that address the profound challenges of our time.

As with any serious disease, the severe human and environmental challenges we face require urgent, comprehensive and uncompromising healing attention. When we each bring the clarity of our commitment, through our diverse perspectives, traditions and disciplines to country and planetary healing, we complement and amplify each other in the same way that nature in all its diversity works in harmony for the health of the whole.

The Movement is not aligned with any particular party, but influences politics by leading forward the desired culture and agenda  and providing a comprehensive platform and strategy to be adopted by all parties

Create a clear set of agreements to be adopted by members of the movement in their entirety that provide the foundations for building healthy governance and a coherent cohesive healthy culture

Create a compelling and unifying  platform that outlines the vision and values of the Movement for a Healthy Country. The platform will reflect public consensus around key issues that affect the health of the whole, the possible solutions and strategies, and thus require their adoption  by whichever government is elected.

FRAMEWORK: Whole-system Health Stewardship

Whole-system health stewardship entails:

  • a whole system perspective, recognizing that all social functions - including economy, justice, security, health, housing,       infrastructure, education, media, welfare and environment are interdependent. Just as the functions in the human body, social functions are interdependent and must work together in service of our collective health and wellness.

  • multidisciplinary and multi-cultural wisdom rooted in healthy living systems and thriving communities to cultivate leaders and citizens with whole system expertise, committed to the collective health.

  • a holistic healing approach to address the layers of trauma and disease in our human and environmental system.

Health is our most precious individual and collective resource.

Health and wellness are the primary hopes we all share for ourselves and our children.

Nevertheless, health is the greatest casualty of our current governance system.

We have learned that our health is interdependent with the health of all other parts of the planetary system – with the health of all people, the community, the land, water, air, other species and the natural environment. When there is privilege and oppression in a system disease and conflict will fester.

Governance that privileges parts of the interconnected system and oppresses other parts violates the fundamental conditions necessary for life to flourish. It also contributes to conflict and disease and jeopardizes the safety and health of all.

The results of the power and profit driven system are health crises that affect each and every one of us.

~ Our air, soil and water are polluted.

~ The food we eat contains dangerous ingredients and toxins

~ The environment and entire species are being destroyed on a daily basis.

~ The rate of chronic disease is rising.

~ Addiction, social violence, social divides, war, poverty, corruption and the oppression of those perceived as "other" are increasing.

~ The prevalent public discourse is violent and divisive.

~ Our public institutions are corrupt and dysfunctional due to political appointments, vested interests, bureaucracy and laws that privilege those in power .

Governance systems, driven by a mindset of power and profit fuel and thrive off divisiveness and the dependence and apathy of citizens. Those in power are invested in the status quo. The immense challenges require urgent unified citizen-led action leading a visionary and compelling alternative healthy model of governance.

Redefining the purpose of government changes everything!

Transforming culture begins with a shift in understanding and awareness. When we shift from stories that idealize power and profit - to stories that value whole-system health and vitality, we shift priorities, and recognize the need for new health-oriented expertise and leadership.

When we recognize that as a species, we have a powerful impact on all Life and as such we need to organize ourselves effectively to ensure the protection and thriving of all Creation for future generations, the true purpose of governance becomes clear.

The only legitimate purpose of governance is to cultivate the health and vitality of the land and all its inhabitants for generations to come.

When collective health becomes our government’s key purpose and organizing principle, a vast range of creative solutions will emerge, led by citizens working towards a common goal. This shared focus sets in motion a coherent and unifying whole-system healing process.

Unity in whole-system health:  Working towards a new form of governance that promotes whole-system health-focused policy unites us all across the divides of race, religion, gender and nationality. It provides an organizing principle that transcends the current language of divisiveness, unifies citizens in life-enhancing ways and leads to foundational laws that will transform our institutions and heal our culture and environment.

Governance for whole-system health means that all government structures, roles, policies and processes derive from this whole-system health purpose and the government, leaders and citizens are held accountable for the impact on the health of the land and its inhabitants.

PRIORITIES: Healthy governance prioritizes and invests in:

  • Learning and educating about whole system health – Initiating a comprehensive learning process in all sectors of society – to create a common understanding of the challenges we face, and the resources and solutions that exist.

  • The physical foundations for life – clean air, water, soil, healthy nourishment and the biodiversity that is an essential part of a healthy climate. When these conditions are fulfilled existing crises will automatically be resolved.

  • Ensuring healthy conditions for life to flourish - ensuring physical and emotional safety, shelter, caring and mutually enriching relationships with each other, other species and the environment, and ensuring hope and opportunities for all to manifest their unique potential in mutual enrichment with the whole.

  • Articulating a comprehensive, systemic health focused agenda and set of root laws and policies that address the multiple interconnected issues simultaneously and efficiently. These  will replace the endless regulations that unnecessarily burden citizens and compromise life for the power and profit of the social elite.

  • Ensuring all impacted parts of the human and environmental system are represented in decision making processes.

  • Cultivating a culture that values mutual respect, mutual nourishment and responsibility for the health of the whole system.

  • Full transparency of the budget, the use of public money and the distribution of government resources, and the elimination of covert deals and financial lobbying driven by private interests.

  • Optimal citizen involvement through the creation of citizen expert councils to support and monitor the transformation of the political and justice system, revise current laws and advise on best policies for all governance functions.

  • Formal Leadership chosen on proven expertise, integrity, compassion, wisdom and a commitment to the health of the whole.

  • A holistic health index is put in place that focuses on a country’s health and vitality according to a comprehensive set of measures that take into account the health and wellness of the land and all its inhabitants as well as the impact of the country on the global environment.

  • A holistic approach to transformation means that existing laws and law making processes needs to be redefined in a way that supports a systemic non-linear adoption of an entire health-oriented agenda – and enables all existing laws to be simultaneously reviewed and modified according to their impact on the health of the whole.

We, the people, unite to create a healthy, competent and compassionate system of governance - a system that puts the health and vitality of the land and all its inhabitants for generations to come as its key purpose and organizing principle.

When we focus on single laws in a linear and isolated manner, we are treating symptoms and cannot accomplish real change. Only when we adopt a coherent set of laws and principles that work together as a whole, can we heal and transform our system.

We call for a shift in the governance structure and that all laws and policies adopted and implemented be those that best serve the health of the whole system by taking into account the long term consequences for all.

We call on all leaders and citizens to adopt the following 10 agreements as the key organizing compass for moving forward, and to work together to support its implementation.

These 10 Agreements form the foundation and organizing principles for a Healthy Earth movement and the basis for co-creating healthy governance.

Building a coherent global movement to transform our deeply ingrained social systems requires clear collective agreements around a universal set of codes – a compass according to which people from all cultures,  backgrounds and sectors can adopt and self-organize effectively.

When the codes of a culture promote self-interest and privilege at the expense of the whole, resources are abused, conflict abounds and the system fragments. When the codes promote personal thriving aligned with the optimal wellbeing of the whole, collective resources are used in healthy and replenishing ways and a culture of deep cooperation and wellness is cultivated.

When we shift from a culture based on power, profit and privilege to one based on whole-system health, we shift from one of argument about isolated decisions to one of iterative discernment as to the whole-system health consequences of decisions. We move from a culture of secrecy and corruption to one of mutual nourishment, accountability, transparency and honesty.
